Catherine Quinlan was born in Maryland but spent her childhood in Guyana. She attended Barnard College where she majored in English and pre-med.
She spent most of her sixteen years of high school science teaching career in New Jersey, where she mainly taught biology and chemistry. She graduated with her doctorate in Science Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and entered into higher education as a STEM Education professor and researcher at Howard University.
Catherine was recently funded to create STEM curriculum representative of African Americans. Her research led her to understand the importance and nature of the narratives in science and to subsequently join the Storyteller Academy in summer 2020. She began her book series Keystone Passage. The scarcity of black children in chapter book series prompted her to create this series. Her goal is for children to enjoy the richness and meaningfulness of African American narratives while learning about black heritage, science, history and other ideas. She wants children to enjoy reading and black children to see themselves in the narratives.
